Drive Smart Driving School is a Texas state–licensed driver education provider offering teen and adult driver education, private driving lessons, defensive driving, and Texas DPS-authorized road testing. Founded on April 22, 2014 by Rodney K. Crawford and Michael “Jose” Torres, the school operates physical locations in Carrollton and The Colony, Texas, and provides online driver education programs available statewide.

Our History
Drive Smart Driving School began in 2014 with a mission to make quality driver education accessible to every Texan. Starting with in-person instruction in The Colony, the school quickly expanded to Carrollton and launched statewide online courses. Today, Drive Smart serves both urban and rural communities across Texas, giving students the choice of in-person classes, Zoom instruction, or self-paced online learning.
Statewide Driver Education Programs
Teen Driver Education – Anywhere in Texas
Our TDLR-approved teen driver education program includes:
- 24 hours of classroom instruction (online, in-person, or Zoom)
- 14 hours of in-car training (7 hours driving + 7 hours observation)
- Parent-taught and instructor-led options
- Road test preparation and on-site DPS testing
Adult Driver Education – 6-Hour Texas State Course
We offer the state-required 6-hour adult driver education course for new drivers ages 18–24, plus refresher courses for adults of all ages. Classes are available in English and Spanish.
DPS-Authorized Road Testing – Skip the Wait Statewide
As a Texas DPS Third-Party Skills Testing provider, Drive Smart offers official DPS road tests at our locations — allowing students from anywhere in Texas to test with us and bypass long waits at DPS offices.
Private Driving Lessons
We offer one-on-one lessons to help students statewide improve their skills, prepare for the road test, or gain confidence in Texas driving conditions.
Defensive Driving for Ticket Dismissal
TDLR-approved defensive driving classes are available to dismiss Texas traffic tickets or reduce auto insurance premiums.
Online Driver Education for All of Texas
With the Drive Smart Online Driving School, any Texas resident can complete the classroom portion of driver education from home, on their own schedule. The program includes videos, quizzes, and interactive lessons, and can be paired with behind-the-wheel instruction at our DFW locations or with an approved partner school.
